Standing out in a good way requires that you have thoughtful answers to expected questions from the interview; answers that demonstrate that you have done some homework. If a recruiter isn't getting many of them then it’s another way to distinguish you from other applicants. On the other hand, if other candidates aresending a thank-you note, then it will appear that you lack interest or follow-through if you do not send a note.
Any opportunity to stay in touch with your prospective employer is good, because it will be very difficult for them to remember you a few weeks after your last meeting.
Try to send it in a timely manner – no more that 5-7 days after the interview. It doesn’t need to be a long letter, just a simple thank you and a restatement of your interest in the position. The letter should be personal, capturing on points in the conversation where you felt you made a connection.
A recruiter might not always notice if they don’t get a thank-you note from a candidate but they will notice a poorly written one.
These notes can be even more important for the sales professional. It shows if you are a person who is professional and gracious, two very important qualities in any sales person developing and maintaining key account relationships.
